Willy has come back to his communist homeland for his mother but they have no time to waste as the border could close at any minute. However they are too late and encounter a barricade preventing them from leaving their country. Willy is distraught as his wife and child are across the border. They have no choice but to return home when they witness a guard shoot an old man who shouts “freedom” as he forces his way through the barricade.

Willy’s mother came to realize that in German you could not have an opinion and your freedom and has kept silent over the years but now seeing that man die for his freedom she feels awake for the first time in years.
