Sherlock Holmes is a champion of the underdog and this is an added factor in the endless pppularity of Conan Doyles creation. In this story we have Sherlock Holmes rushing off to the west of England to save a man, James McCarthy,  not only suspected of murdering his father but sitting in Hereford prison waiting to be tried for that crime.
