A late afternoon fog has settled over San Francisco's marina. Up a few blocks from the yacht harbor, Maudie Pemberton looks out of her apartment window, and pensively watches the traffic moving mistily over the golden gate bridge. The wintry daylight is waning, and she moves away from the window and lights a lamp before hearing Clifford's knock on the door. He's finished work, and will be going to meet his Dad and Emmott Harper at his new place of business soon.
