It's after dinner in Seacliff, San Francisco as Father Barbour crosses the upper terrace to go through the hedge to his son Jack's house next door, but Betty greets him with a certain reserve as he comes gaily into the kitchen. Father Barbour thought that he had heard his car, but it was Freddy Boomster driving out. Henry tries to engage Betty in conversation about the family, but he's not very tactful, discussing how he'd like grandsons to carry on the Barbour family name - to a mother of six girls!
