When a visitor to Paul's studio reaches the third step from the top, and hears the typewriter, a long established precedent among the Barbours calls for an about-face and discreet retreat. But this afternoon, Paul's niece, Mrs Joan Farnsworth, hears Paul's typewriter, but quietly tries the door knob even so. She is admonished by Paul, and so heads back downstairs, but as he's already lost his train of thought from the interruption, he calls her back.
