It is 7:30 on a Saturday evening in July 1929. For a week an oppressive blanket of heat and dust has surrounded the town of Whitney in the Texas panhandle. Despite the unpleasant weather however, Whitney is enjoying its usual Saturday night activity. Sheriff Dave Fellows is strolling down the Main Street when he sees old Dr Thomas staggering around, which is very unusual as he doesn't drink.
