For three days an ugly storm had lashed the West Coast. Marlow was driving through the rain to see his new client just north of Santa Barbara. Felix Drum had an interesting case for Marlow. Julia Perry, the woman who handled his many business interests, had gone missing three days ago. She left on a regular weekly business trip to LA, but didn't return the next day as usual. Marlow starts his investigation by visiting Ms. Perry's cottage, but the only clue he can find is a torn book of matches with some writing on, but just as he is about to leave Drum's right-hand man appears at the door holding a postcard that arrived for Ms. Perry.
