The mistake he made was going through that black door. If he’d left it shut everything would have been all right. He’d have married Marsha, become a full professor and had his name in all the papers. It happened when he received a grant to hunt for a lost city in Central America, the city of a fire god. He met a man who told him a tale about his grandfather who had been to the lost city and he offers to take him there for $1000 and half of any treasure they find there.
