Fort Fenton was the head of navigation on the Missouri not far from Helanar, Alder and Virginia City. During the gold rush to these diggings most of the prospectors from the east traveled by steam boat and the village around the fort became a boomtown over night. It was late one evening in July that an Indian waited in the shadows of the colonels’ house on the far side of the parade ground. Near him a great white stallion lifted his head into the evening breeze.
