Mr. Turner was an artist who arrived in Trinidad in the dry season when the island was at its best. There he met Ada and Paul Barton, a sugar manufacturer, and Paul commented on how it must be lovely not to have to work for a living. Turner suspects Barton’s difference with him is more to do with envy then Barton suggests Turner is irresponsible because he hasn’t the courage to accept responsibility and bet him $50,000 that he couldn’t stick to a useful routine job for two years. He offers him a job working in his laboratory and Turner accepts the bet…
