Spring was the most welcome season of the year in the Yukon. The long days of sunshine melted the deep snow and released the creeks and rivers from their icy prisons. Sergeant Preston had put his dog team away for the summer and was following the trail into Selkirk on horseback. Before him, ran his big lead dog King, who never left him winter or summer. Suddenly a shot rang out to the left of the trail!
