Major Hale lived through battles, terrible weather, disease, and Indians, but ended up getting killed in an innocent accident. His funeral is being held on top of a hill. Everyone is gathered around the grave as the Chaplain conducts the burial service. The Major had a lot of friends and one true love, Jessie his wife of thirty years. After thitry years as an army wife Jessie Hales decides not to become a civilian but to stay at Fort Laramie and put back what the army has taught her, and guiding new army wife Mrs Winton is a good place for her to begin
