Young David had been drinking and while driving home at two o’clock in the morning in his sports car he hit a person near the railroad and left the scene of the crime. He knows he should have contacted the police but he panicked and could think only of his scholarship and how any stress could push his already fragile mother over the edge. He confesses all to his dad and his dad decides that the best thing to do is for him to take the fall for his son, for him to tell the police that it was he and not his son who was driving the sports car that night and left the scene of an accident. After all he was not on the verge of getting a full scholarships to Harvard, he hadn’t been drinking, and he wasn’t a teenager with two strikes against him as a driver to begin with. No he was a full college professor with a distinguished record who would tell the police he was coming home on a foul night with visibility almost zero and dead tired after correcting two hundred term papers. David protested but his father told him that this was the way it was going to be that this was the most sensible way out of a bad situation.
