The third play in the Freedom Company series, Robert Sherwood's An American Crusader, seeks to honor the memory of a man who fought against cruel odds for freedom of speech and the freedom of the press. His name was Elijah Lovejoy, and he was the editor of a St. Louis newspaper, which he used to express his anti-slavery views - and was murdered for doing so.
