Inspector Hopkins asks Sherlock Holmes to investigate the murder of Willoughby Smith, secretary to Professor Coram. Smith was found dead at Yoxley Old Place, with a sealing-wax knife as the weapon. Hopkins suspects that the murderer is a woman disguised as a man. Holmes and Watson travel to Yoxley Old Place to investigate, and Holmes sets a trap to catch the murderer.
