Markoff buys his wife Marya a beautiful ring and said he would like to have done more for her but his business troubles have been like a stone around his neck. But when he gets his money from the fire insurance he doesn’t plan on rushing back in to business and suggests to Marya that they go away together. However the thoughts that go through his head are that she did not appeal to him as the kind of woman he should have and if he hadn’t been so frightened by America when he first arrived he would never have married her at all. He felt that with the money he had from the fire insurance he could have the kind of life he deserved.
