In the small town of Burley in the upper part of the state an old man named Ben Curtis, the village’s leading and wealthiest citizen, lay sick in his bed. Millie Curtis, Ben’s young and beautiful wife, was his only attendant. When a bullet shot comes through Ben’s bedroom window he is convinced someone is trying to kill him. He tells Millie to get Barton Drake to investigate. His daughter Gretchen Curtis tells Barton that Millie is trying to kill her father for his money as she is in love with another man.
