On 22nd May 1662, King Charles II of England, married poor, plain, Catherine of Braganza. The marriage was childless, and her influence on English politics negative, as compared with his many mistresses, among whom was Nell Gwyn - pretty, witty, Nell - who Charles sincerely loved until the day he died. Nell was born in 1650 in a little cottage in Hereford, and she first sold oranges in the Theater Royal, before later becoming an actress, which is where she met King Charles.
