Mrs Hartnett is driving home with her brother Peter when a green sedan runs them off the road and Peter is shot dead. When Mrs Hartnett speaks to the police she tells them that her diamond necklace is missing, her necklace that was valued at $30,000. Mrs Harnett contacts private detective Steve Grainger to help her recover her necklace. She tells him that the necklace, that her husband David had given her, hadn't been stolen at all but that she had put it up as collateral for $3500 that her brother Peter owed in gambling debts.
