1.  M E S S A G E   F R O M   N E D

First of all let me apologize for the huge gap between the last
two newsletters. Joy and I have been so busy with one thing and
another ... but all being well we'll get back to getting them
out every month.

As you will have noticed, if you're a member of RUSC, Joy and
I have been adding LOTS of thrilling shows to RUSC throughout
the month of October leading up to Halloween on the 31st.

We don't usually add shows on Wednesdays (it's the one day when
we take a rest) but we couldn't let Halloween go unrecognized,
so for your Halloween entertainment you will find some extra
scary shows posted that day.

In past years on RUSC for Halloween we have featured shows such
as Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde, Mercury Theater's War of the Worlds,
Suspense's Donovan's Brain and Mercury Theater's Dracula, the
latter three coincidentally all starring Orson Welles.

This year, following a request from a friend of RUSC, we are
presenting to you old-time-radio's renditions of Daphne Du
Maurier's famous story The Birds (see "In The Spotlight" below).

Happy listening

Ned

2.  I N   T H E   S P O T L I G H T

The Birds by Daphne Du Maurier was first broadcast as an hour-
long version on the 20th July 1953 by Lux Radio Theater starring
Herbert Marshall in the lead role.

The following year, on 10th July 1954, Escape aired Daphne Du
Maurier's story "The Birds", adapted for radio by Robert Wright.

If you've never seen the classic Hitchcock film you're in for a
real treat :-)

Let me set the scene.

The location is a farmhouse on the southern coast of England. The
autumn countryside around is desolate and bleak. Nat notices that
the birds on the coast are unusually restless and that the land
and sea birds are mingling together in an unnatural partnership.

That night he is woken by a tapping on the bedroom window and
discovers a bird trying to get in.

When he goes to shoo it away there are half a dozen of them and
they seem to be attacking him, pecking at his face and eyes with
their sharp beaks.

It is thought that the Arctic airstream was causing the birds to
migrate south in immense numbers and intense hunger was driving
them to attack human beings.

This is a gripping tale and although Escape's version is
probably closer to Du Maurier's 1952 novel, keeping the same
character names, Lux's longer version and brilliant sound effects
and music manage to build up the tension and extreme feeling of
claustrophobia with great affect.

We loved them both and now for Halloween 2007 you can hear them
here on RUSC.

Enjoy!

3. F R E Q U E N T L Y   A S K E D   Q U E S T I O N S

Over the years I've received many e-mails asking me how to do
everything from downloading MP3 files through to how to transfer
shows to CD's. I figured that the percentage who take the time
to e-mail in their questions are probably just the tip of the
iceberg, so it is highly likely that if they needed help then
lots of other people do too.

To help answer all your questions and give a little more
information besides I would like to draw your attention to
"The RUSC Guide to Old Time Radio and Using RUSC" which
includes the following chapters.

Chapter 1 - Old Time Radio
Chapter 2 - Old radio show genres
Chapter 3 - A Quick Guide to the Home Page
Chapter 4 - A tour of the RUSC Member's area
Chapter 5 - How to Download
Chapter 6 - Listening to shows on your computer
Chapter 7 - Transferring to CD and Cassette
Chapter 8 - Books on Old Time Radio
Chapter 9 - Useful Software
Chapter 10 - Frequently Asked Questions
